Working at height refers to any task performed at over 1 meter above ground without protective railings or other structural fall prevention. In such cases, fall protection equipment like harnesses or safety nets must be used unless alternative measures ensure safety.

Fall protection products such as harnesses, lanyards, retractable fall arresters, anchor points, and connectors are part of Protecton’s core expertise. Employers are legally required to provide this equipment and ensure it is used correctly. Users must be trained to use the gear properly and to understand the risks involved in working at height.

A fall arrest system (EN 363) consists of at least the following components:

• Harness (EN 361): Includes thigh and shoulder straps. May also include a positioning belt (EN 358) and integrated vest.
• Connecting element: Positioning lanyard (EN 358), energy-absorbing lanyard (EN 355), guided type fall arrester on a line (EN 353-2), or a self-retracting device (EN 360). Includes connectors and carabiners (EN 362).
• Anchor point (EN 795): Fixed or mobile structure rated to withstand over 1000 kg of force. Can include webbing or cable anchors or other compliant hardware.

Positioning belts (EN 358) are not classified as fall arrest systems on their own. They are designed to restrict access to hazardous areas, not to stop a fall.

Annual inspection of fall protection equipment is required according to EN 365.

Comfort improves compliance. The best equipment is ergonomic, lightweight, and easy to wear. Padded shoulder and leg straps, flexible construction, supportive belts, and integrated vests all help make gear more user-friendly and comfortable to wear over long periods.
