In kitchen work, there are many risks such as slippery floors, falling objects, and hot liquids. While kitchen shoes in Finland are not legally required to have safety features like toe protection (S1 or S2), it is recommended to use shoes with certain safety features. These include slip-resistant soles, water and oil-resistant materials, and a comfortable fit.

Kitchen work requires special attention to safety. The Occupational Safety Act requires the employer to assess workplace hazards and risks, and a toe protection may be necessary if heavy or sharp objects are handled. A toe protection (e.g., EN ISO 20345 standard) protects your toes from falling objects and provides added safety.

In kitchen work, other important features are also emphasized:

• Slip resistance: Kitchen floors can often be wet or greasy, so shoes should have slip-resistant soles, such as those marked with SRA or SR.

• Water and oil resistance: Shoes should protect against splashes and moisture.

• Comfort and ergonomics: Long shifts require shoes that fit well, breathe, and are lightweight to support your feet throughout the day.

If you work in a kitchen, ask your employer if toe protection or other safety features are mandatory. If you are purchasing shoes yourself, consider your tasks: slip-resistant soles may suffice, but toe protection provides extra safety, especially when handling heavy or sharp tools.
